What to watch for, how to drive, and the signs on this trip.
Watch out
Warning
Reynisfjara warning lights
Yellow/red system — never green. After 2025 fatalities and a February 2026 landslide, the red threshold was lowered and a gate now blocks the cave and columns. Stay ≥30 m from the water. Never turn your back to the sea. Treat it as a brief, stay-back viewpoint.
Warning
Night driving on two days
Sep 27 and Sep 29 are the failure days. Sunset ~19:03–19:17; full dark by ~20:00. Headlights always on. Slow for sheep. Use only designated pull-offs for aurora — never stop on the carriageway.
Warning
Reykjanes eruption watch
No eruption as of August 2026 (last Sundhnúkur event Jul 16–Aug 5, 2025). IMO reports more magma under Svartsengi than at any point in the series; another eruption is considered likely in weeks or months. KEF and Route 1 have been unaffected. Blue Lagoon can close at short notice.
How to drive
Chip-and-PIN before you leave town
Many unmanned Orkan/ÓB pumps need a chip-and-PIN card. Orkan also takes Apple/Google Pay. Verify the PIN at a staffed N1 (Hella 24h, Vík, Kirkjubæjarklaustur 09:00–22:00) and top up during open hours.
Parking apps
Parka for most south-coast lots (Sólheimajökull, Fjaðrárgljúfur, Dyrhólaey). EasyPark for Kirkjufell (24/7). Download both before you lose signal.
Aurora window
Late September is an excellent equinox window (Russell–McPherron). In Iceland, Kp 2–3 is enough with clear skies. Best 21:00–02:00. Use vedur.is aurora + cloud map and the NOAA SWPC 3-day Kp forecast.
Pace threshold
If combined pace (stops + driving) runs below ~40 km/h, drop Djúpalónssandur on Sep 27 and Fjaðrárgljúfur on Sep 29.
Mobility discipline
Reynisfjara: stay behind the warning-light line. Kerið, Fjaðrárgljúfur, Gullfoss: flat rim / upper viewpoint only — skip stairs and descents. Djúpalónssandur: viewpoints, not the beach. Seljalandsfoss: skip the behind-falls loop.
Road signs
Headlights always on
Required all year. The Auto setting is not enough. Days 2 and 4 finish after dark — lights before you roll.
No stopping
Stopping or parking is prohibited. Aurora, sheep, and waterfalls are not a reason. Use a designated lot. Never the carriageway.
Sheep on the road
Possibility of sheep on the road. Drive carefully — they may jump in with short notice. Night returns on Days 2 and 4 are the failure.
Paved road changes to gravel
Tyres lose grip at the join. Slow before you leave the tarmac, then keep it slow. Flying stones chip glass if you rush.
Single-lane bridge
Common on the south coast. Slow down — another car may be coming. The car that arrives first crosses first. If in doubt, give way.
Closed road — Lokað
Closed for all vehicles, including bikes. Pedestrians may walk; you may push a bike. Closed means closed. Never improvise a highland shortcut.
Blind crest
Keep to the far right and slow down. Oncoming traffic can be hidden over the rise.
Roundabout
Two-lane: first exit = outer (right) lane; further exits = inner (left). No lane changes once inside. The inner lane has right of way when exiting. Signal out.
Unbridged rivers
Mostly on F-roads, 4×4 only. This itinerary stays on paved Route 1 / 54 / Golden Circle. If you see an unbridged river, you took a wrong turn.
SafeTravel app
Live roads and weather, plus send GPS to 112 if you are hiking. Download before you leave Wi-Fi.
